We had earlier reported about Silambarasan’s new flick Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, the stills of which you might have seen in newspapers and the web. You might also have noticed the absence of any cast and crew details in the first look. Remember, we had told you that Silambarasan had indeed bagged an exciting project, which will see the best in Kollywood come together. This will definitely be Silambarasan’s most high profile movie yet.
Let’s break the suspense, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya will be directed by none other than Gautham Menon. The surprises do not stop here, the heroine will be Trisha (with Silambarasan after nearly five years. The last time was in Alai) and in all probability the music will be by A.R. Rahman, something that is yet to be confirmed. If that happens, it will be the first of Silambarasan’s career and also a first for Gautham who has worked only with Harris Jeyaraj thus far.
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya is a huge surprise on all fronts. No one even had a scent of what was happening. The banner, which is producing the movie ‘Escape Artists Motion Picutres’, has been floated by Gautham himself, no one had the slightest inkling on that too. After Vaaranum Aayiram, the media has been running from pillar to post trying to know what Gautham is up to next. There was news of a movie with Ajith under the AVM banner, some said that he might take up Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkalam and there had even been news that he was looking to start a Telugu project with Mahesh Babu in the lead. All this while, Gautham held his cards close to his chest. We also need to give credit to Silambarasan who has managed to stay away from media eyes. We were speculating Kettavan’s revival, but Silambarasan is not too keen on being the bad man any time soon. And, wasn’t Trisha supposed to start work on a big budget Telugu project after completing Sarvam? We must admit that Gautham and Co., pulled off a stunner.
According to initial reports and stills, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya will be a sweet and simple love story, a throwback to Gautham’s initial days in films with Minnale. There has been no official launch of the movie but on the very day the promos were flashed, the first shot was taken at AVM studios, one that shows Silambarasan walking in through a gate. No other details of the cast and crew have been divulged yet. We will inform you about this ‘instant’ movie’s progress as and when Gautham chooses to reveal anything.

Films based on feuds between brothers have been a hackneyed concept when it comes to Tamil cinema. In literal sense, there have been hundreds of films churned out on the same conceptualization. Of course, ASAL isn’t an elision as it revolves around the conflict between brothers in a powerful family that is narrated with ample commercial ingredients meant for Ajith fans.
Expectations were more with ASAL, since the film establishes new avatar of Ajith Kumar as a co-director and screenwriter. But, has he handled these criterions with perfection?
Of course, he has done justice over these arenas by gratifying to the tastes of his fans. But then, the screenplay turns out to be tedious on more parts with uninteresting moments. Saran has been wearing the same old-hat of penning stories based on betrayals and retaliations. His previous films with Ajith Kumar– ‘Amarkalam’ and ‘Attagasam’ are the best illustrations for it. On the dot, ASAL is a well-tailored piece of work catering the ardent buffs of Ajith Kumar while for regular moviegoers it proves to be a passable show.
Set in backdrops of Paris, the film centers on Jeevanandham (Ajith Kumar), a top-charting arms dealer and his sons Sam (Sampath), Vicky (Rajeev Krishna) while Shiva (again played by Ajith Kumar) happens to be the son of his second wife. When Sam and Vicky are impelled by his uncle (Ghajini fame Pradeep Rawat) to sign a business deal with a group that plies weapons for terrorists, Jeevanandham abides Shiva’s words about pooh-poohing the offer.
Nonetheless, as Jeevanandham passes away because of cardiac arrest, Vicky and Sam strike deal with the same group that their father never wanted. Here enters a deadly mafia Shetty (Kelly Dorjee), who abducts Vicky to Mumbai for causing havoc in contract he was supposed to sign with the same group.
Shiva and his close associate Sarah (Sameera Reddy), a member of French embassy flies down to Mumbai to rescue Vicky from Shetty with the help of his dad’s friend Mirasi (Prabhu). Shiva comes across Sulochana (Bhavana), an orphan raised by Mirasi who falls in love with him at first sight.
When Shiva becomes the savior for Vicky and Sam, he pleads his stepbrother to remain with him forever since it was their father’s last wish. But for a greater shock, Shiva is shot by them thereby drowning in the seas.
What had actually urged them to commit such a dishonoring act is revealed during second hour with an unexpected truth revealed about Shiva.
Situations become speculative for these brothers and evil uncle when they find out that Shiva is still alive. Ajith Kumar stuns us with his elegantly stylish looks and performance. But it would be better if he can focus on ‘romance’ factors as well. Right over his past 5-6 films, the actor hasn’t been trying his luck with comedy and romance quotients. His performance as both father and son is overpowering and keeps us engrossed throughout the show. Sameera Reddy as an official from French Embassy doesn’t get scope while Bhavana looks cute as a lovable fille. Rajeev Krishna and Sampath have done justice to their roles. In particular, Sampath excels with his body language and mannerisms. It looks like he has spent quality time on preparations. Suresh Balaji as a Tamil speaking cop in France is perfect while Pradeep Rawat sleepwalks through his characterization. Prabhu doesn’t get much prominence while Yughi Sethu provides relief with his comedy tracks. Kelly Dorjee steals the show with his mind-boggling show. To be precise, his complete portion in the first half happens to be highlighting attribute.
Bharadwaj has to seriously work on tuning better melodies. Except the title song and ‘Em Thandhai’, none of songs impresses us. Debutant Prashanth carries the entire film on his shoulders with his stunning cinematography and he’s sure to make it big in tinsel town. Antony’s editing is slick and decorous and art work by Prabhakar requires special mention.
Vivek Karunakaran, one of the leading designers of India has embellished Ajith with fantastic costumes while Bhavana and Sameera Reddy must thank their costume designer Nalini Sriram for having projected them so lavishly graceful with cool costumes. On the flip side, the screenplay turns to be wearisome during some moments, but kudos to Saran for presenting the film with a shorter duration of 120mins.
As mentioned earlier, ASAL is sure to be a promising movie for Ajith fans while others it’s an above average flick with technical excellence on all arenas.

With this film, Dhanush is also back with Jawahar, who had made him successfully tread the family sentiment path in “Yaradee Nee Mohini”. “Kutty” is essentially about how the hero handles a one-sided love affair and whether his faith ultimately pays off or not.
For once, Dhanush plays the regular college guy with average looks. Shriya, a stunner in the same college, is the centre of attention. While Kutty (Dhanush) falls for Geethanjali (Shriya Saran), she is dating a rich guy (Sameer Dattani).
Kutty’s innocent, fun-loving and easy-going attitude makes him the most popular student in collage and this makes Sameer insecure.
And then other problems creep up. Samer’s father, an MP, opposes his proposal to marry Geetha, as he has plans to use his son’s marriage as a political weapon. Kutty takes up the task of uniting the lovers and he succeeds in the task. Slowly Geetha feels the depth of Kutty’s selfless love and she finally makes her choice.
The love triangle involving Dhanush, Shriya and Semeer has been intricately woven and could be the biggest strength of the movie. The screenplay, however, lacks pace. The romance among the three fails to connect with the audience, thanks to a bland narration.
Dhanush has tried his best to inject life into the proceedings with his comic sense. He breathes life into his character Kutty, a simple, shy guy who yearns for love. He is the major factor that makes the film click and one just can’t imagine anyone else in this role.
Shriya Saran has definitely got a welcome break from her glamourous image. She actually looks really cute and shows that she can act! Veteran Radha Ravi is his usual commanding self. Meghna Naidu is impressive in the item number.
Without being technically brilliant, the film fulfils the minimum criteria for an entertainer. It has a different storyline, fun-filled script and awesome performances by the lead actors. But the music is a big let down.
The director has tried hard to make a Bollywood-like feel-good romantic flick and has almost succeeded. If he had managed to maintained the pace in the second half, the film would have been a far better experience.

Porkkalam tells the story of man who stands up to a whole gang of bad men to rescue a woman who had come to him for help. There is nothing much to elaborate upon the story. What makes it interesting and different to an extent is a fact about the male protagonist (Kishore) that is revealed only in the second half. The revelation is bound to surprise the audience and the director must be commended for holding the cards close to his chest without appearing unconvincing. Once the fact is opened to the audience the pieces that evoked curiosity in the first half seem to fall into place to make a plausible picture.

Ramana is a mimicry artist who owned a studio also. He falls in love with Shiva Munjal, sister of his personal assistant, but unfortunately she is engaged with Arun Vijay. So Ramana wants to take a revenge and murder Shiva Munjal’s sister and Arun Vijay’s brother, who also planned to get marry soon. After the murder, Ramana cooks up a different story that turns Shiva Munjal against Arun Vijay. The misled minds then go about damning each other’s lives. Does the truth ultimately come out or does the crookedly cunning mind get the pleasure of seeing his plans work? That is what Thunichal is all about.
First thing, thanks a lot for Arun Vijay for not dubbing his own.. Its really a big relief! The only artist who performs well is Ramana. He excels in the role of mimicry artist and gives a good stuff in the climax too. Debutant Shiva Munjal’s appearance as well as performance is not up to the mark. Technically, there is nothing much that stands out and music by Premji Amaran fails to make any sort of impact.
