Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Denmark Movie Review ::
The music lends a threatening aspect to the opening scene, where we in slow close ups – on and off deliberately out of focus – get to follow the opening of a package. Inside the package, post marked in Hong Kong, is a framed plant. The camera starts to move backwards, taking in more of the room and revealing Sven-Bertil Taube as the opener of the package. He holds the frame in his hands, lowers his head and slowly starts to cry.
Niels Arden Oplevs Män som hatar kvinnor is based on the first of Stieg Larssons three bestselling novels, meaning of course that it is basically guaranteed large box office numbers – but the expectations will probably match those numbers. Weather the film manages to live up to these expectations I cannot say – seeing as I am one of the probably only eight people who has not read Stieg Larssons books. But as a piece of cinema, completely removed from its literary origins, it definitely leaves an impression!
The music mentioned above, written by Peter Fuchs, is the first thing to register in the mind as something interesting… Something that make everything feel very serious. The impending-doom-score composed by Howard Shore, for David Finchers Se7en, springs to mind – and this only a few seconds into the film.
The cold, hard, uncomfortable reality – where the movie takes place – is populated by a highly recognizable legion of people straight out of Swedens acting elite… (Gösta Bredenfeldt, Lena Endre, Ewa Fröling, Björn Granath, Peter Haber och Marika Lagerkrantz to mention a few) …and they all seem to have been so thrilled to be a part of this project that they almost as one has taken their characters a step back, allowing the spotlight to be shone on the two main characters,
who also get to drive the story forward; the reporter Mikael Blomkvist (Mikael Nyqvist), who is digging through a 40 year old murder case involving a well known corporation family with Nazi connections, and the 24 year old computer hacker EMO Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) that every day hacks Blomkvists hard drive, captivated by the puzzling evidence (or lack thereof).

i cannot wait for this movie to come out and to send all my friends. first of all, it was eye candy. the action sequences are brilliant and bad ass. the gore was beyond rad – there is actually a love scene in which two people operate on each other while kissing. it blew my mind. this movie is filled with original material. stunts like you’ve never seen them mixed with satire. and it was funny. it’s rare to see a action movie that makes you laugh. the acting was great. the stars have great chemistry. if you like futuristic movies, you will love this movie. if you love action movies, you will love this movie. if you like movies in general, you will like this movie. it is truly for everyone. not only was i captivated the entire time, but the story and the scenes stayed with me. i keep thinking about them. don’t miss this film, seriously.
I was able to see this at a preview and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a creepy, engaging, quirky, science-fiction, buddy-movie thriller. It had a compelling and unexpected story that was at times darkly funny. It’s really a scary cautionary tale about the convergence of greed and consumerism with the medical industry. Oddly appropriate for the conversation about Universal Health Care that the United States will be having this year. The visual world that the film draws you into is very eerie, slick, modern and showy for the people who can afford health care and dark and grimy in the underworld shadows. Jude Law was quite a surprise – I’ve never seen him play a character like this. He did a great job at being both tough and vulnerable (and handsome). This movie is definitely not for the squeamish. But, if you like watching surgery shows you will love this.

Harry Brown has been one of those titles I’ve seen crop up from time to time, the kind that makes waves at a few festivals, building a nice buzz before disappearing without ever really establishing a feel for what it’s all about. Well, Cinematical was just given the chance to premiere the poster ahead of the film’s theatrical release in the US on April 30th thanks to Samuel Goldwyn and I’ve not only finally learned what it’s actually about, but that if you want to instantly sell me a ticket to a movie, just make a poster that prominently features Michael Caine holding a revolver while a city burns itself to the ground behind him.
Harry Brown Denmark Movie Review ::
Michael Caine portrays Harry Brown, an aged honest joe living in a city of chaos, where juveniles are driven into drugs and crime. A new angle of view to the 90s’ popular crime genre since
Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs(1992) and Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting(1996)… Essentially, this movie suggests what can be done with streets when an old chap, who has a medal-of-honor in naval forces, is left alone in his small apartment. It offers an excellent concept through aged Harry Brown’s point of view, which is as good as the past summer’s animation hit: Up.
It’s obvious that the film draws huge benefit from its thematic values. First, Harry Brown’s wife passes away due to geriatric causes. Then, his close friend and neighbour Leonard Atwoll gets killed by rounder juveniles at a night time.
Whilst having a life-time crisis, police come to his door for investigation of Atwoll’s murdering. Under a confusion of fear, anger and despair; all of a sudden he finds himself running after the vengeance of his friend Atwoll.
Keeping track of the street gangs, he lays a trap to show up as a businessman trading guns with them. Since it’s Michael Caine as we know him, he is an expert at fooling people with detracting their attention; so by courtesy of his timing skills and luck, he dishes those young criminals one by one.
Above all, Daniel Barber as a director turns this such a run-of-the-mill plot into a great suspense/thriller story.
He tries to prove that Harry Brown’s first murder was unwillingly just an accident but his last was a psychopathic mincing! Same idea here as the way Brown removing the traces behind him, starts with cleaning and collecting garbage, then turns out to setting fire and sabotaging locations. Besides, characterization is at its best. The criminals were so factual. As an important technical detail the sounds have been captured marvellously (with the echoes of fired bullets being heard behind windows), and this is what makes a crime movie makes sense.

Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock’ n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. “The Runaways” were hugely influential as the first successful all-girl hard rock band; its members included guitarists Joan Jett and Lita Ford, drummer Sandy West, singer-keyboardist Cherie Currie and bassist Jackie Fox. The band was brought together in late 1975 by impresario Kim Fowley, who thought a novelty act of teenaged girls performing in leather and lace would be an easy sell, but the girls ended up proving to be serious and influential musicians with songs like “Cherry Bomb.” The band lasted about four years together, falling apart over management and money issues.

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! I saw this movie in January at a Sundance event in Madison Wisconsin with Cherie Currie actually in attendance. There’s a lot of two things in The Runaways, drugs and sexual references but really what can you expect from a movie about a 70s rock band. For those of you who have read the script in advance only small details change for instance Joan doesn’t actually steal the leather jacket in the beginning nothing bigger then that really. The music is amazing of course even if you’re not a Runaways fan it’s a pretty catchy and weaves itself easily into the story line. You don’t see even a glimpse of Bella in Kristen’s portrayal of Joan Jett, having seen Joan Jett live, Kristen really captured her essence. Dakota Fanning was noticeably a better actress then Kristen Stewart, Dakota was Cherie and stole the show hands down. When the real Cherie Currie did a Q and A after the movie was over I got to see just how perfectly Dakota mastered even her personality.
The movie it did drag at parts but the highlights definitely made up for it. The scene where Joan walks out of her first guitar lesson and Cherie at the talent show are two of my favourite movie moments. I don’t know the actual filming lingo for the artistic angels and blurriness for the lack of a better word but it was all used very effectively creating an artistic feel not just another high budget Hollywood film. This movie may bring up a lot of questions about Cherie and Joan’s possible romantic relationship during their time in the Runaways but when asked at the Q and A Cherie said it was nothing more than friends experimenting. To address the debate over the whole Kristen Stewart-Twilight audience this movie will attract all I can say as a Twilight fan who was a Runaways fan before Twilight was invented, I think some of the content in the movie will disturb the stereotypical Twilight fan. There’s a lot of drug and sexual references made that I think a younger audience like that might not understand for instance Cherie masturbating in the shower to images of Farrha Fawcett (behind a shower curtain of course) or I believe it was Joan pissing on a guitar.
Overall it’s a good movie not my favourite but still solid, some parts dragged but with all the star power, great music, a pretty crazy story and a lot of heart I think this movie has the potential to top the box office in March.

Znany pisarz (Andrzej Seweryn) przeżywa romans z dużo młodszą od siebie, piękną kobietą (Magdalena Boczarska). Wbrew wywołującej oburzenie środowiska różnicy wieku, wykształcenia i pozycji intelektualista poślubia atrakcyjną „dziewczynę znikąd. Zaślepiony uczuciem nie podejrzewa, że ich kontrowersyjny związek może nie być kwestią przypadku. Nie wie, że jego partnerka od dawna spotyka się po kryjomu z innym mężczyzną (Robert Więckiewicz), z którym łączy ją nie tylko silna namiętność, ale i groźna intryga. Zaangażowana w niemoralny układ z agentem, przekazuje mu informacje mające służyć kompromitacji pisarza. Erotyczna fascynacja kochankiem stopniowo przeradza się w głębokie uczucie, choć kobieta zdaje sobie sprawę, że jest jedynie narzędziem w zaplanowanej akcji tajnych służb.
Niebezpieczna gra uczuć między cenionym pisarzem, jego piękną młodą żoną oraz jej kochankiem, rozgrywająca się w burzliwych latach 60-tych.

TW Różyczka ładnie wygląda i pachnie, ale ma kolce. Każdy, kto zapragnie mieć ją dla siebie, wcześniej czy później skaleczy się. Film Jana Kidawy-Błońskiego opowiada o zatrutych ranach, które, zamiast się zabliźnić, ropieją i prowadzą bohaterów do autodestrukcji.
“Różyczka” stanowi przykład bardzo dobrego kina środka – takiego, które powstaje zarówno z powodów ambicjonalnych jak i chęci dotarcia do szerokiej publiczności. Szkoda by było, gdyby cała dyskusja na jego temat miała się ograniczyć do spekulacji, czy rozgrywająca się pod koniec lat 60. opowieść o pisarzu (Seweryn), który wdaje się w romans z podstawioną przez UB dziewczyną (Boczarska) inspirowana była historią Pawła Jasienicy. Tym bardziej, że reżysera od rozdmuchiwania skandalu obyczajowego interesuje bardziej badanie uniwersalnych mechanizmów kontrolowania jednostki przez system.
Film z pewnością nie spodoba czcicielom Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej, który raz na jakiś czas detonuje bombę wstrząsającą opinią publiczną: X donosił, Y współpracował, Z miał teczkę. Kidawa-Błoński pokazuje, że za każdą znalezioną w archiwach notatką operacyjną może kryć się coś więcej niż zwykła podłość i oportunizm. Jego bohaterka zaczyna niczym Mata Hari, a kończy jako tragiczna Galatea denuncjująca Pigmaliona. Na współpracę z urzędem decyduje się z głupoty oraz miłości do narzeczonego – ubeka (Więckiewicz).
Infiltracja polega początkowo na czytaniu pożyczanych od figuranta zakazanych książek oraz chodzeniu z nim do teatru. Naukowy dorobek oraz obycie pisarza imponują Różyczce – nagle okazuje się, że wytrawne wino z Francji smakuje dużo lepiej niż wóda polewana przez jej chłopaka. Gdy platoniczna fascynacja przekształca się w romans, dotychczasowi oprawcy stają się ofiarami, zaś dramat polityczny zamienia się w melodramat.

The Story
Well, Woody Allen’s newest film might not be generating the same buzz as his sexy Spanish romp, Vicky Christina Barcelona, but Allen is still out pounding the pavement for his latest romantic comedy. In a conversation with Duane Dudek of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Allen confirmed that he has finally christened his latest film Whatever Works. The flick stars Larry David and Evan Rachel Wood in what has been described as a “May-December romance”. In the interview with the Sentinel, Allen tells Dudek that the film will be a comedy, but, “a slightly different one for me. It’s a blackish comedy.” — and if there is one guy who has earned the right to be a little bitter about romance, it’s Allen.
When it comes to David, it should come as no surprise that Allen is thrilled with his choice of leading man; the two seem perfect for each other. Allen tells the Sentinel, “He’s got a great thing of his own. He’s got a great, what would you call it, sarcastic, sour or vitriolic, wonderful, wonderful, no nonsense sense of humor.” But don’t feel bad for co-star Evan Rachel Wood; Allen saved a little of the praise for his latest ingénue, saying he was “stunned at how great” Wood was, despite her only being 20. So feel free to fill in your own joke about Allen and young girls here, because after 16 years of Soon-Yee jokes, I have officially run out of material.

This review DOES contain spoilers, so if you haven’t seen this movie yet, and finding out about it beforehand will upset your enjoyment, go see it and then come back. Or don’t see it. A lot of people are unhappy with this flick and I believe I understand why.
One of the reasons this movie has been getting bad reviews is that it is being advertised as a romantic comedy, and it isn’t one. You have Sandra Bullock, who has been in some very good romcoms, and two good-looking guys (including Thomas Haden Church who is always willing to mock his immobile good looks and deadpan delivery); the advertising campaign looks like a romantic comedy. What else can it be? Answer, it’s a pure clown comedy, with a lead who starts out unlikeable, but goes on an inadvertent voyage of self-discovery. Its antecedents are not the romcoms you grew up on, but classic, flat out farces like Keaton’s THE NAVIGATOR and Harold Lloyd’s WHY WORRY? in which we start out disliking the hero heartily. In these movies, we wait for the comic to get kicked in the pants, because we don’t like him….. but by the end of the movie, he has grown in wisdom and self-reliance, and we wish him well. Or, in this movie, her.
It’s a difficult balancing act and some people think Miss Bullock has fallen off the wire. Since she starts out as an unbearably smart motormouth to whom people are an utter mystery who winds up stalking Bradley Cooper, it’s easy to write her off as insane and give up.

It’s easy and probably a bit simplistic to describe Lebanon as this year’s Waltz With Bashir, but we’re gonna do it anyway (hey, we’re simple people). Like Bashir, its director, Samuel Maoz, is a veteran of the brief but brutal Lebanon War. Substitute dreamlike animation with a claustrophobic, tank-periscope view of the conflict and you’re halfway there.
Based on Maoz’s depiction of his experiences in the 1982 war, Lebanon is set in the cramped and sweaty confines of an Israeli Defence Force battle tank – the kind depicted in this new promo poster rumbling menacingly through a field of dead and dying sunflowers.

Yes, it’s true, I will not call this film a masterpiece but it most definitely does catch the emotions and fears of a young soldier. It must be remembered that unlike most countries, Israelis must serve in the army after high school/when they turn 18. This means that not every soldier is prepared emotionally for what is about to come especially at a time of war. Finally there is a movie that portrays the soldiers as what they really are – human beings.
I believe the comment left by the person who was disappointed by the movie comes from a very naive place. It is very easy to think that all soldiers are robotic with one aim – to shoot the enemy but to understand the complexity and the mixed emotions a 19 year old boy, who just finished high school and was thrown into this situation with no warning, feels as he begins the first day of a war is virtually impossible unless you see it through the eyes of someone who has actually witnessed the horrors of war in this situation.
The acting was very good and gave a real feeling of Israeli persona and brotherhood. It is realistic and unbiased – shows both left and right wing behaviors. It is not an easy movie and it really captures the feelings of the characters in a way you can not escape.

I attended the World Premiere of “Unmade Beds” at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. This is the second feature from writer/director Alexis Dos Santos, whose first film, “Glue” (from Argentina), was one of my Top Picks of 2006 after having had its debut in Toronto. So naturally “Unmade Beds” was a must on my list and I had high expectations. It met and exceeded them.
The film stars Déborah François and Fernando Tielve (Carlos in “The Devil’s Backbone”) as two naivé young expatriots living in London, wandering souls in search of a home. Axl (Tielve) is also looking for his mysterious English father, whom he hasn’t known since his hazy early childhood. His nights consist of drinking, dancing, and waking up in strange beds with even stranger people. Meanwhile, Vera (François) has her sights set on a mysterious man as well — someone with whom she can spend a night without commitment.
She is equally lost in a cold world where eye contact and a smile are a rare commodity. This is the big city, and it can be cruel as hell. Their goals are different, or are they? The pulsating indie rock soundtrack seamlessly blends with the live music performed onstage in the concert club which doubles as their crash pad.
Some tunes are reprised, with common themes paralleling the pair’s progress (or not) in finding what they’re searching for. Watch for Tielve’s mirror “performance” of Black Moustache’s “Hot Monkey, Hot Ass!” It was a crowd pleaser in all the screenings I’ve attended, especially since its boldness is in such stark contrast to the puppy dog innocence he displays through much of the narrative.
