Whilst we weren’t really digging the poster – which seems more Disney than dystopian – all that much, the just launched trailer on the official site for Mo Ali’s future set gangland flick Shank, is an altogether better looking proposition. The World War II-set, it turns on a French police operation involving 9,000 officers, which rounded up 13,000 Jews, mostly the elderly, women and children, on the night of July 16, 1942. Most were kept at Paris’ Velodrome d’Hiver sports stadium; many were sent on to Auschwitz. The operation was ordered by France’s Vichy government.

France’s Gaumont Pictures produced the 2010 highly ambitious — and potentially controversial — movie The Round Up, written and directed by Roselyne Bosch (who also wrote and directed the 2005 psychological horror film Animal). The Round Up (La Rafle) will tackle the subject of French collaboration with the atrocities of The Holocaust…

Budgeted at E20 million ($26.4 million) and set during the second World War, The Round Up is about a French police operation involving 9,000 officers, which rounded up 13,000 Jews, mostly the elderly, women and children, on the night of July 16, 1942. “America has a lot of movies, about Vietnam, the CIA, the Iraq War. This round-up is probably the biggest tragedy in French history, but it’s never been told in film,” producer Alain Goldman said.

Easy Virtue English Film Synopsis :

The Story : Easy Virtue is a social comedy film based on Noel Coward’s play of the same name. A young Englishman marries a glamorous American. When he brings her home to meet the parents, she arrives like a blast from the future – blowing their entrenched British stuffiness out the window.

Between world wars, the Whittaker’s estate is sinking; only the iron will of Mrs. Whittaker staves off bankruptcy while she awaits her son John’s return from the continent. To her dismay, he brings a bride: an American widow who races cars.The bride, Larita, thinks she and John will visit and then go to London, where he’ll work and she’ll race. But John is to the manor born, and mother is nothing if not a master at plans and manipulation.

Soon it’s all-out war between mother and bride, with John’s father, a burnt out veteran of the Great War, in the bride’s corner ineffectually. Mother has a plan to join with the neighboring estate; only Larita is in her way. Can’t we all get along?

Easy Virtue Hollywood film Review :
While I normally prefer film versions of famous plays to be as faithful as possible to the original works, this lovingly opened up, perfectly cast and filmed elaboration of Noel Coward’s very edgy “comedy” – a treatise on post-WWI morality and the culture shock Britain went through – would almost certainly have made the Master enormously proud. It certainly provides more quality entertainment than any intelligent audience has been served up in many an intellectually sterile, bombastically overcharged year at the cineplex.

Usually when a film leaves you feeling that you’ve experienced a full evening in only just over an hour and a half, it’s an indictment of the plodding pace and dragged out text – but not in the case of this fast paced, lavishly set piece fairly packed with ideas and events. The period references (perfectly chosen Coward, Porter and other period and period style music, news clippings of “current” events like Houdini’s death, the “latest” 1920’s farm equipment, “advanced” books, etc.) used to enhance our trip back in time come thick and fast in the first minutes only to be followed in just as quick order by the elements of culture shock Ben Barnes’ John Whittaker brings back to his BRIDESHEAD REVISITED-style household along with his new American wife, played by the film’s impressive technical lead, Jessica Biel.

So “opened up” is the piece in fact (on second viewing, the period references and extra “bits” like the inappropriate, MAME-like, fox hunt joke and questionable dog bit – while both undeniably funny – almost seem TOO thickly layered on), that the “secret” around which Coward’s original play turned is unnecessarily “ratcheted up” and left for rather late in the evening – somewhat as Coward himself did with many of his plot points in his other comedy of ill manners revolving around ill scheduled visits to another country home of the same original year, HAY FEVER.

Cheriya Kallanum Veliya Policeum is too obvious that it’s almost possible to predict the last scene after you have seen the fifth. There is very little here that should make the film work; almost everything is sadly missing.
Cheriya Kallanum Veliya Policeum tells the story of a mysterious man Sadasivan (Mukesh) who walks into a house at a village called Pancharakkara, knowing that the man of the house Kumaran (Jagadeesh) has committed suicide. Soon he becomes dear to everyone around, and is a big help to Kumaran’s widow Soumini (Vidya) who has been left high and dry after her husband’s demise.

The whole film has been set around a house, where a death has taken place. Everyone who could probably add to the village scenario is around; starting from the Panchayat President who sneaks around with ulterior motives in mind at midnight, to the comrade, the local tea shop owner, the tailor and the drunkard to name a few.
Amidst these several caricatures, most of which serve no definite purpose, one surprisingly stands out. Kuttappan (Kochu Preman), the blind man who hops into a car to show the guests their way is an eye-opener. He is there on almost every scene and there are quite a few occasions when this diminutive man throws in some big surprises at us.

To run out of ideas is quite natural, and filmmakers often run the danger of running into dead ends. Some of them make ways out of it quite imaginatively, while some others mask it all up smoothly so that none would notice. There is a third category that would beat a dead horse for a long time and finally ape much accepted and popular ideas, that those who are watching would be able to do so only in amusement.
There is this joke for instance that was (for want of a better word) ‘invented’ by the incomparable Siddiq Lal duo about a decade back which saw a man mistaking a group of fleeing men to be charging after him. He takes off without a thought, and since then we have seen variations of this man in any number of films, the last one being the one being discussed. That is pardonable.

What is not pardonable is when an entire song sequence looks like it’s a straight lift off another very popular song that had ruled the hit charts for long. I am referring to the Kumara song that looks like a poor copy of the immensely accepted crowd song in Katha Parayumbol. What could be worse than the same actor singing the song in both the films?

I remember those days in the early 90’s post-Harihar Nagar, when Mukesh and Jagadeesh (sometimes joining hands with Siddiq) appeared in several flicks, some of which minted money and some of which sank without a trace. Times have changed indeed, and I wonder if the audience of the day would still be interested to see the duo making a go for similar films.

Die Teufelskicker (The Devilkicker) Korean movie Review

Moritz loves soccer-football, and the sport club SV Hulstorf that his father trained is his home. It made it hard when his parents separated and he and his somewhat cranky “no idea about football”-mother have to move to his fierce Grandpa Rudi. Rudi resides precisely in the same city as the arrogant and wealthy Mark, the star of the local club VfB Eichstädt and fights against Moritz right from the start. Moritz finds new friends in passionate street kickers, the brothers Mehmet and Enes, Niko, the somewhat strange Alex and of course Catrina, piquant-wise Mark’s sister, who has a ballerina’s career. Gradually Grandpa Rudi unbends himself. When the vicious kickers decide to get together at the old club “Sportfreunde Blau-Gelb”, they find out that their new coach Rudi himself formerly played there and was an excellent footballer. Shortly before their first major tournament suddenly Moritz’s father appears to take him away again to Hulstorf. In diesen Verein wird Moritz also bestimmt nicht eintreten! Doch wie der Zufall es will, schließt er bald Freundschaft mit leidenschaftlichen Straßenkickern: Die Brüder Mehmet und Enes, Alex, Niko und – ausgerechnet Marks Schwester Catrina bringen Moritz auf die Idee, einen eigenen Verein zu gründen. Das ist genau das richtige Thema für Opa Rudi, der erst jetzt damit rausrückt, dass er selbst exzellenter Fußballer war. Der perfekte Trainer ist gefunden! Auf dem verwilderten Fußballplatz der “Sportfreunde Blau-Gelb” gehen die Kids in die Vollen – um sich schließlich dem größten Fußballmatch stellen zu können, das sie je erlebt haben!

“Die Teufelskicker” basiert auf der gleichnamigen Jugendbuchreihe von Frauke Nahrgang, die Mädchen und Jungen gleichermaßen anspricht und deren riesige Fangemeinde mit jeder neuen Folge anwächst. Zusammen mit den Hörspielen wurden national bereits über 1 Million Titel verkauft. Der Film dazu soll bewusst kein reiner “Fußballfilm” werden – thematisiert werden universelle Themen wie Freundschaft, Teamgeist, Eltern und Schule, kurz: alles, was ein action- und facettenreicher Familienfilm braucht!

The story of the film is, Hero Nag Chaitanya was to foray into films and become a good director. But his father rejects his plea.
After completing engineering, Krishnudu introduces him to Puri Jagannath where he joins as an Assistant Director. And there you go, he finally falls in love.

The main plot of the movie is known to be that, hero and heroine are in love that is routine but the element of innovativeness is that heroine is elder to hero and that is the reason their love has to face some problems in the society. Hero is 22 years and Heroine is 24 years old in that movie.

Attack the Gas Station! 2 {Juyuso seubgyuksageun 2} Korean movie Review

The film tells the story of a quartet of thugs who rob a gas station out of sheer boredom, having robbed it only a few days previous. Unable to get any money from the register, they take everyone hostage and start dispensing gas and keeping the money. The film becomes progressively more and more farcical as the characters find different ways of amusing themselves, mostly through the mixed cast of characters that come in through the gas station. However, it’s only a matter of time before they start upsetting the wrong people.

I acquired my DVD of this film several years ago as an unavoidable freebie. Consequently I was in no rush to see it. But when my stack on unwatched DVDs sank low enough, I gave it a try — and was pleasantly surprised to find this far better than I had expected. Of course, this film about of punks taking over a gas station, because the till wasn’t full enough (and they want to keep collecting cash from customers until they get a respectable bundle) is hardly an Ozu-esque character study. Nonetheless it manages to give the characters more depth than one initially expects — and develops a little bit of poignancy — and it is imaginative and canny in its “dumb” humor.

There once was a good subbed Korean DVD, but I didn’t get my lower-quality Hong Kong freebie DVD (panned and scanned, alas) until after the Korean version was out of print. Consequently, for now, if I want to re-watch this film, I have to settle for an impaired viewing experience. All I can do for now, is hope for a release someday of a subbed widescreen DVD. Nonetheless, if you can find a cheap enough (or free) copy of the extant DVD version, do what I did — give this film a chance.

Plot

It’s been 10 years since Mr. Park’s gas station was attacked by motorcycle gangs. To get his revenge, Park hires a quartet of dodgy boys: a lethal puncher, a footballer with a killer high kick, a potbellied wrestler, and a video game addict who mastered the art of bluffing. But these employees turn out to be more dangerous when they demand their overdue salaries.

Niyang Rapik Malayasian film Review :

After the success of “Adnan Sempit” and several other local films in 2009, film production company Metrowealth (MIG) together with director Ahmad Idham have once again collaborated on the new horror film “Niyang Rapik”. The film has been brought to the silver screen after TV drama series “Puaka Niyang Rapik” managed to obtain high ratings, pulling in 4 million viewers when it was aired.

“Niyang Rapik” starts with Zack (Fizz Fairuz) who dies due to a horrible curse. His untimely death shocks four of his best friends – Helmi (Kamal Adli), Zizan (Shaheizy Sam), Saiful (Zed Zaidi) and Amir (Awal Ashaari). Thus, they journey to Niyang Rapik, a village where they’ve conducted research for their final-year history project, to return a karambit stolen by Zack. However, things in Niyang Rapik aren’t as cheerful as before.

It does not take long before the action unfolds in “Niyang Rapik” and audiences are forced to guess what happened to Zack and his friends while they were in Niyang Rapik for the first time. Even though the storyline is simple, the twist is an added advantage to audiences’ interest leaving the story to be quite engaging.

“Niyang Rapik” boasts an all-youthful cast. Liyana Jasmay is the only ‘rose among the thorns’. Playing Laila, the daughter of Tok Neram (Nasir Bilal Khan), Liyana’s character this time seems a lot different from her previous roles such as “Papadom” (2009) and “Duhai Si Pari-Pari” (2009) that had her playing cheerful characters. Liyana manages to convey her character’s dark and mysterious side well. Other cast members such as Awal, Kamal, Shaheizy and Zed do not disappoint. Even though there are a large number of lead actors and there is a worry of one actor outshining the other, they manage to effectively convey their roles in their own way.

Other than the solid acting by the cast, viewers can also appreciate the beauty of Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu that was chosen as a filming location. Even the visual effects in “Niyang Rapik” were commendable. Viewers can look forward to seeing a stomach open up, a head in a jar, and many more.

“Niyang Rapik” has many factors to make it a box-office hit. Even though the success of a drama series does not usually guarantee success on the silver screen, films of the horror genre that includes a good-looking cast is enough to pull in audiences.
